Sandbags save homes as floods hit Yorkshire
Relentless rain overwhelmed flood defences in Yorkshire again yesterday, bursting river banks in central Leeds and forcing firefighters to evacuate hundreds of people from their homes and businesses. Road links in the region were cut and rail tracks flooded, closing down lines between Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and York at one stage. The Environment Agency last night issued 116 flood warnings and 15 severe flood warnings as minor streams rose by up to three metres (10ft). .

Maine firm gets nod for Clearwater wastewater improvements
Clearwater has committed $1.8 million in a contract for a grit-removal system. Hydro International, a Portland, Me.-based provider of sustainable products and services that control and treat stormwater, wastewater and combined sewer overflows, won the city's business. Hydro will supply five Grit King advanced hydrodynamic separator units to upgrade the grit-removal processes at two of Clearwater's three wastewater treatment plants. The 12-foot diameter Grit King units will replace the existing grit removal systems at the plants. The purchase came as part of a larger initiative to upgrade the headworks at Clearwater's Marshall Street and East Advanced Pollution Control Facilities, a release said. A system was designed that could be retrofitted into the city's existing headworks, said Thomas Friedrich at Jones Edmunds & Associates in Tampa, in a statement.
