Monday wild card

Eye On Boise: Gov. Jim Risch's call for special session allows no room for other bills here.

1. Tim Eyman, Washington's leading initiative promoter, failed to qualify Friday for a ballot spot for his $30 car-tab initiative in a random test of his petitions here.

2. If you're keeping track of the birthrate of new firms in the area, the busiest new-business hotspot is Kootenai County. Thanks to soaring growth, Kootenai County's rate of new-company formation is three times faster than Washington state and more than twice as fast as Spokane County here.

3. A Hells Angel biker involved in an amateur bull-riding culture got a rough taste of western culture and a broken arm for his efforts here.

4. How Missoula got the Rolling Stones to come calling here.

Poll: Most think minimum wage show have automatic cost-of-living ...

In a recent Los Angeles Business from bizjournals poll, a majority of readers said they thought minimum wage should have automatic cost-of-living increases.

In the informal poll, 66 percent of voters said "Yes, these are the economy's lowest-paid employees and deserve an annual raise to keep up with inflation" while 32 percent said "No, the current system works best for everyone" and one percent of respondents said they were not sure.

Comments included:

"I agree but also note that there is another class "the working poor" who make over min wage and don't get the same increase either - who is looking out for them?"

"Yes, yes, yes, and it would be about time. Particularly in taking out the lobbying and politicking involved."

"If the lowest paid empolyees want to improve their standard of living, they should seek more education and aspire to get a better job.

LASIK Works Well, According To Long-term Study Of Highly Myopic ...

ScienceDaily (Dec. 30, 2007) — Laser surgery to correct vision problems has been in use since the early 1990s. Photorefractive Keratotomy (PRK) is typically used to correct low to moderate myopia, while laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is preferred for high myopia corrections. Although over 18 million LASIK procedures have been performed worldwide, there is still some controversy regarding the maximum correction possible and efficacy with this technique.

Nine-year-olds offered cervical cancer vaccine

Gardasil, which protects against the strains which cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers and 90 per cent of genital warts, is licensed for use in girls aged from nine to 25 and in boys aged nine to 15. Boys can carry the virus and pass it on to their partners.

Thornbury Hospital, part of the BMI Healthcare group of 49 acute care hospitals in the UK, has announced it will immunise anyone falling within the vaccine's licensed age range.

Sian Sheeran, Thornbury's clinic nurse manager, said girls were reaching puberty earlier and a few are sexually active even at such a young age while others may have a strong history of the disease in the family.

No one at the hospital could comment yesterday on whether anyone as young as nine had been vaccinated with Gardasil so far.

Forty per cent of women aged 20 to 24 in the UK have been found to be infected with HPV and it is thought the vaccine could save about 400 lives a year.

Fred Thompson Loss Ends Republican Party

That probably just proves that he's sane, really, but presidents have to spend four years working ridiculously long hours under constant scrutiny. People who want semi-normal lives, therefore, are unsuited for the job.

McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Giuliani are still in the running. One of them will ultimately win the nomination and run against the winner of the Hillary Clinton-Barack Obama playoffs in the Democratic Conference for the presidential championship.

None of them are my ideal candidate. It's quite possible that Huckabee is far enough from my ideal that I'd prefer one of the Democrats; thankfully, it's looking like I'm not going to have to make that version of Hobson's choice. Otherwise, as distasteful as I find aspects of their agendas and personalities, I can't imagine that Hillary Clinton would be my preferred alternative.

Outsell buys Eduventures' business research unit

Outsell Inc., a syndicated research and advisory firm for companies in the information industry, acquired the business research division of Eduventures Inc., the companies said tuesday.

Burlingame-based Outsell and Boston-based Eduventures did not disclose financial or other terms of the deal.

"Eduventures is committed to making a positive contribution to higher education, and today our company is dedicated to helping colleges and universities become more efficient and successful institutions," said Tom Dretler, Eduventures' president & CEO since 1999. "As higher education became our clear focus, we needed to find a home for our business research division that would provide our clients with insight, analysis, and customer service that was second to none. Outsell is that firm, and it was our clear choice from the outset."

The companies said they will maintain independent consulting divisions focused on serving their respective clients but will combine their resources "as appropriate on custom client engagements that could benefit from the unique expertise of both firms."
