3i sets its focus on eye surgery specialist

Corporación Dermoestética, a Spanish plastic surgery provider, has accepted a £174.5m ($347.8m) offer from 3i, the UK private equity group, for Ultralase, a British subsidiary specialising in laser eye treatment.

Dermoestética revealed at the end of November that it was in exclusive talks with 3i that could lead to a full takeover bid.

Ultralase will join 3i's diverse portfolio of healthcare investments across Europe and North America. These include stakes in companies such as PaperPak Products, a manufacturer of adult incontinence products, and Groupe Carso, a French testing services company.

Benazir Bhutto dies in suicide attack

It is hardly the usual drill of your average suicide bomber is it? There is clearly more to this than meets the eye. There are the radicals, the present government in Pakistan and there are also those on her own side who worried she was being used as a pawn by the West. I just heard Bush on TV. Also listening to BBC people saying, "Oh shock horror, Pakistan is a nuclear country!" Well they can blame Bush for that one. Their access to nuclear technology was suspended in the late 90s because of the unstable situation there. Bush gave it back to them in exchange for access to their airspace and a clear route into Afghanistan. Clearly when it suits him he can dish out access to nuclear technology like sweeties being dished out as treats to obedient children who do what they are told. .

I hope he makes a full recovery soon. I belive he gave his all last night and went home happy with what i saw. .

In Cuba, bartering eye care to regional neighbors strains health ...

A spiffy new tour bus pulled up to the top eye hospital in Cuba on a sunny day this month and disgorged 47 working-class people from El Salvador, many of whom could barely see because they had thick cataracts in their eyes.

Among them were Francisca Antonia Guevara, a 74-year-old homemaker from Ciudad Delgado whose world was a blur. She said she had visited an eye doctor in her home country but could not even pay the $200 needed for artificial lens implants, much less for the surgery.

"As someone of few resources, I couldn't afford it," she said. "With the bad economic situation we have there, how are we going to afford this?" Cuba's economy is not exactly booming either, yet within two hours Guevara's cataracts were excised and the lenses implanted, with the Cuban government paying for everything - including air transportation, housing, food and even the follow-up care.

Your Comments : Interim PM tells world leaders at the UN, Why he did ...

In the mean time no rush to elections and Fiji needs a strong and resilient army in place to keep the peace and guide the process of national re-education. How long? As long as it takes. And Downer (who will soon be gone), Peters and Clark can learn some patience and some good manners.

Wireless in the Antarctic

Now limping back to Tasmania from the Antarctic under limited engine power, the 79-member scientific crew of an Australian icebreaker has gotten a first-hand lesson just how isolated you can be and still be in touch with the world.

In the early hours of 22 July, a major engine-room fire aboard the 3,900-ton Class A icebreaker Aurora Australis left it powerless in the dark Southern Ocean, just 100 nautical miles from the Antarctic coast. The research and supply ship was on a rare venture into the bitter-cold southern winter to do marine research.

Within minutes of the fire breaking out, vessel Captain Tony Hansen sent out a distress signal via the Inmarsat A satellite system to Hobart, Tasmania, headquarters of the Australian Antarctic Division and the ship's owner, P&O Polar Australia Pty.

Argonauts give Stubler first head-coaching assignment

Days before an announcement that had been almost 40 years in the making, Rich Stubler underwent laser surgery to clear up an infection in the back of his throat. He also slipped on the ice outside his home, opening a gash that by Thursday had dried into the shape of a crescent moon over his left eye.

He was swollen and raspy when the television cameras finally started rolling. But no hardship was going to diminish his first day as head coach of a professional football team.

"Every day is a good day," the 58-year-old Stubler said, smiling. "I haven't had a bad day in so long, I can't even tell you."
