Critics of homosexuality should see words' effect

Critics of homosexuality cause suffering in at least two ways.First, they produce guilt, shame and fear in the lives of innocent adolescents who find themselves oriented toward persons of the same gender. This can be so severe as to convince the youngster that the life is just impossible. The second kind of suffering arises when hoodlums ``punish'' homosexuals by committing sexual assault or other forms of battery. The more the ``sin'' of homosexuality is emphasized, the easier it is for the perpetrators to commit such acts.Granted, the authors of the opinions in the Pantagraph do not wish for such things to take place but nevertheless they do occur. This ``gay-bashing'' may be statistically rare by some stretch of the imagination, but it certainly was not rare when it happened to me.Critics should remember the words of Jesus Christ as they are reported in the Holy Bible: ``Judge not, lest you be judged'' and ``Let he who is without guilt cast the first stone.''Gene NadenOak ParkThe writer is a former resident of Bloomington.

Tears, Passion, Logic: Spot the Odd One Out

There is some strange stuff indeed happening in the world of science lately, and William Saletan has been on the beat. In Saturday's Human Nature column, Saletan looked in on science's progress at defining the physical properties of thought.

Mangar launches a full-throated assault against such philosophical contemplation of science's progress:

Enough of this metaphysical nonsense from Saletan. [Neuroscience] is a materialist enterprise. I'm getting pretty sick of Saletan coming at us again and again with the "we've found the soul, we've scanned choices, natural selection is shaped by free will.. Did I blow your mind?"

No, dooood, you did not. The reason it sounds so freaky to scan "free will" or "the soul" is because you haven't...no one can and no one will.

Miscarriage of Justice, Court of Appeals ruling means Casper could be ...

There is now a three-foot berm on the side of the road to prevent something like that from happening again. A look on the other side shows the 300-foot cliff that the van and Catherine Bly-Casper crashed down. A picture of the van after the fall shows the roof and the front end completely crushed.

"It's not only just us that suffered loss," Ben Casper said. "I mean it's the whole family and that kind of brings us all together."

Casper was convicted of Depraved Indifference Murder. But he was also charged with Intentional Murder. Both charges brought 25 years to life in prison. But in 2006, the state Court of Appeals ruled that practice was unfair and overturned Casper's case.

"Fundamentally one of the most egregious and outrageous miscarriages of justice that I've ever seen in my nearly 30 years as a prosecutor," Ontario County District Attorney Michael Tantillo said.

Focus on Function

Fitness depends on your health history, vanity, goals, skills, injuries and commitment. Endurance and body-fat percentage and the strength of your heart and core are benchmarks, but we overlook the bottom line: how we feel and what we can do. It has nothing to do with awards, unless they spur you. Beyond the adulation, top athletes are fueled by inner affirmation. They know what they need — and train for it. So should you.

The battle over two drug treatments

Thousands of Canadians will be diagnosed this year with macular degeneration, a debilitating eye disease that primarily strikes older adults and can rob them of their vision and independence.

But an argument over whether the government should pay for an expensive treatment when a cheaper alternative is available is bringing a contentious debate over the competing interests of price, clinical evidence and accessibility into the spotlight.

In Canada, two treatments are available that seem to fight the progression of wet macular degeneration, a severe form of the disease that has traditionally been challenging to treat.

One, called Lucentis, has shown remarkable success in clinical trials, but can cost patients tens of thousands of dollars a year. The other, Avastin, is available at a fraction of the price but the drug, developed to fight colorectal cancer, hasn't been approved by Health Canada to treat the eye disease.

MOH stresses dos & don'ts for lasik clinics

'We want to ensure the patient's safety, and misleading ads may sometimes jeopardise that,' said a ministry spokesman told The Straits Times.

'These are medical professionals not businessman, so advertising can be tricky - we want to get everyone on the same page.'

The session was held after the authorities got wind that some of these advertisements had given unrealistic expectations about the procedure; with results being oversold and risks and side-effects downplayed.

Some of the 25 ophthalmologists who attended the hour-long, closed-door meeting at the College of Medicine building in the National University of Singapore elaborated on what they were asked to avoid.

Their advertisements should not boast about the number of operations performed, for one. Nor can clinics use celebrities to promote their services; or highlight success stories.
