HP to buy enterprise software company Exstream

Hewlett-Packard Co. said Tuesday it agreed to acquire Exstream Software LLC, a provider of enterprise software designed to streamline creation and delivery of personalized documents and other communications materials.

Palo Alto-based HP (NYSE:HPQ) did not disclose financial details of the deal.

Privately-held Exstream is a portfolio company of Bethesda, Md.-based American Capital Strategies Ltd. (NASDAQ:ACAS).

Plucky Jaiden beats odds

WHEN tiny Jaiden Kimber entered the world an amazing 17 weeks early, he joined an exclusive club of medical marvels.

The bright-eyed babe is one of SA's most premature babies to live, teetering on the limits of survival when born at 22 weeks and six days.

The fact he survived, weighing just 570g is remarkable – and a testament to the skills of medical staff at the Women's and Children's Hospital.

But he also faced another heartbreaking set of odds.

Parents Sheena and Jared, both 36, had lost three out of four babies through a string of unrelated events that doctors compare to lightning striking again in the same place.

In just five years, Mrs Kimber lost her 16-week premature baby Luke hours after he was born; six months later she suffered an ectopic pregnancy, then a year later she had a miscarriage.

Still vowel mouthed

OH NO. Another cackle is coming. But at least they are getting easier to predict. Like a Native American with an ear to the ground, one can study Janet Street-Porter's vocal chords at a distance for the next guffaw, at least five words before it actually begins. The only thing that could stop it would be a contradiction, snagged on a swear word or a particularly violent vowel. But no, here it comes, like the 9.15 from Chippenham.

"I don't know how not to work. Ha, ha, ha."

Street-Porter is wearing a pink V-neck jumper that matches her lipstick. The once-trademark glasses are gone, courtesy of laser treatment in 2001, and she looks youthful for 62. But slightly harried. She has been working this morning; she will work again this afternoon. As a jobbing journalist, she writes two columns a week for the Independent and a monthly interview for Marie Claire.

This won't be a onetime demonstration of feisty fitness, meant to show himself just what he can do on his 90th birthday. He does this series of exercises to start every day.

And that is part of the reason why Ernie Harwell, the legendary radio voice of the Tigers, has hardly slowed down. Since retiring in 2002, he has gone to bat to preserve Tiger Stadium, he pitches fitness for Blue Cross Blue Shield, and he fields countless requests for his time and energy. For Michiganders, he remains the same beloved gentleman from Georgia as the day he ended his final broadcast by saying, "I thank you very much, and God bless all of you."

Living in the present

Ernie has a thorough recall of the past, but he doesn't live in it. His home doesn't disclose that he was a major league broadcaster for 55 years, including 42 with the Tigers.

On the road again: BSU men head to Northern Illinois

DeKALB, Ill. -- In late November, Ball State's basketball team embarked on a journey it probably wasn't ready to tackle.

The inexperienced Cardinals began a streak of five consecutive road games with a contest at St. Joseph's in Philadelphia. They lost that game, and their next four -- all by at least 10 points.
