| Eye Surgeon At Dublin Clinic Faced Misconduct Charge In The U.K.
An Eye Surgeon who narrowly avoided a serious professional misconduct sanction in Britain is now operating in Dublin. Ballsbridge,Dublin.Dec,06,2007--Dr. Anupam Chatterjee was the subject of a British General Medical Council (GMC) fitness to practice hearing in 2003 after a patient on whom he performed Laser Surgery accused the Doctor of permanently damaging his sight. The Manchester-based Doctor was cleared of the charge but admitted during the hearing that he had gone against guidelines warning Doctors not to operate on both eyes on the same day. The guideline was intended to make sure that any potential damage suffered by patients with complications would be limited to only one eye. After his eyes were left permanently damaged, Manchester lawyer Paul Burton complained to the GMC saying he had not been warned of the potential risk.
New laser may widen scope for eye surgery
New techniques in laser eye surgery could eliminate night vision problems and other undesirable side-effects of the treatment, enabling thousands more people to put aside their glasses and contact lenses. The latest high-speed, high-precision lasers and iris recognition technology can provide customised procedures to replace the previous "one treatment fits all" approach, resulting in an operation that produces 20/20 vision or better, ophthalmologists say. The innovations improve the popular LASIK (Laser in Situ Keratomileusis) method of eye surgery, which is used to correct sight and astigmatism – problems resulting from an irregular-shaped cornea. While this treatment can correct mild sight impairments for the majority of patients, those with more severe problems or natural fluctuations in the shape and thickness of the cornea can be considered ineligible for surgery because of the risk of complications.

Twelve days later, Carey's arm had ballooned to nearly twice its normal size, and pus was oozing from a boil where the zit had been. After $180,000 in medical bills, four doctors, and two hospitals, Carey learned that the supposed pimple was actually the flesh-eating "superbug" bacteria commonly known as MRSA staph infection. You may recognize MRSA from recent news reports, following a study concluding that more Americans die each year from antibiotic-resistant MRSA infections than from HIV/AIDS. MRSA commonly spreads through hospitals, but Carey hadn't been to a hospital or doctor for months before her infection. So where did she get the potentially fatal infection? Carey says she knows exactly where she got it — the Maricopa County Jail. She wasn't there as an inmate, but as an attorney visiting her client.
Sundance: Is it selling out?
Nor does this corporate convergence end when the sun goes down. All-night bashes -- such as those at Harry O's, which became MySpace Nights at Tao Park City for the past two nights here -- boast such deep-pocketed bed-fellows as T-Mobile, Nylon magazine, Hugo Boss and Kritik Clothing. More privately, producers also throw post-premiere dinner parties for cast members and financiers. Tonight, for instance, Hilton is expected to be on hand for the Bon Appetit Supper Club on Main. This is only the second year the magazine -- which partners with event managers Livestyle Entertainment -- has been at Sundance. Initially, Bon Appetit's vice-president and publisher Paul Jowdy wondered if the so-called "Swag-dance" had gotten out of control and whether hosting the ultra-exclusive function was even a good idea.

The Footnote Police vs. Ward Churchill
The University of Colorado committee investigating Ward Churchill has found him guilty, guilty, guilty. And on some level, they're right: Churchill is guilty of occasionally shoddy scholarship and the dubious practice of ghostwriting, and perhaps even more. But we should be alarmed by the investigative committee's report, and not merely because the committee exists only because of a concerted effort to fire Churchill for his obnoxious and idiotic comments about 9/11 victims. .
